Five “BE” Steps
When a person believes the gospel, they should begin following Jesus right away by taking some initial steps of obedience. Anyone can say they believe in Jesus, but those who really do will be willing to act on what they believe.
As a disciple-maker, it’s important for you to make sure that every disciple understands each “Be” Step and then takes that step. All these steps could be explained in one (or two) conversations. The lessons allow for more time, discussion, and better understanding. These steps come directly from the teachings of Jesus, and they are on the Disciple-Maker Checklist. They are essential for the multiplication of disciples. The five “Be” Steps are:
Before we do a brief study on each of these steps, let’s talk about assembling a discipleship group.

- Believe (in the gospel).
- Be Baptized (in water).
- Be Filled (with the Holy Spirit).
- Be a Witness (of what Jesus did for you).
- Be Jesus’ Disciple (by obeying Him).
Before we do a brief study on each of these steps, let’s talk about assembling a discipleship group.
Form a Discipleship Group
The five “Be” Steps have two objectives:
Leading one or more disciples through these “Be” Steps will strengthen the disciples and allow time for them (and you) to find more disciples.
Once you have a discipleship group you are ready to begin studying the “Seven Commands of Jesus” in the GROW section. But make sure that each disciple also takes the five “Be” Steps.
A discipleship group should have a minimum of two disciples, not counting the disciple-maker, and a maximum of five. If the group gets much larger, some disciples likely will not engage in the conversation.
- To see each disciple baptized as a new believer, filled with the Holy Spirit, and becoming a disciple-maker.
- To assemble a discipleship group (DG) of about three to five disciples.
