5 – Multiply disciples and churches

“Multiplying disciples and churches” is the fifth of “Five Essentials of The BFAM Strategy.” But is it really an “essential?” After all, Jesus commanded us to “make disciples,” not “multiply disciples,” right? Well, let’s look again at what Jesus said:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.” – Matthew 28:19

Think about that; Jesus wants us to “make disciples “of all nations.” How will we do that? Before we answer, it’s important to know that the original word used in the Bible that was translated into English as “nations” is the word, “ethne,” which means people groups who share a common language, culture and/or ethnicity.”So Jesus didn’t merely tell us to make disciples of every country in the world. He told us to make disciples of every people group within the countries of the world. How can we possibly do that? There’s only one way; we have to multiply.

None of us speaks every language or relates to every culture or ethnicity in the world. But as we disciple people who disciple people who disciple other people, some of our disciples may be bilingual or trilingual, or part of another culture where they can disciple others. And God will call some immigrants to take the gospel back to their own people where they originated. And when they do, they will make more disciples and disciple-makers.

And here’s another question? As disciples are being made in more and more people groups around the world, where will all of these believers gather for fellowship, prayer, encouragement and training? Listen to whom the apostle Paul addressed his letter to the Galatians:

“To the churches of Galatia.” – Galatians 1:2

Galatia was a region in present-day Turkey. Do you see that? In just one region of one nation, there had to be multiple churches for the disciples there. As more and more disciples are made of various people groups, more and more churches need to be started for these disciples to gather, grow and support one another.

The multiplication of disciples and churches is not only important to cross ethnic, language and cultural boundaries, multiplication is required to reach one large people group. Even within one’s own ethnicity, culture, and language, there will need to be disciples who make disciples who make disciples, and churches that plant churches that plant churches. It’s the only way to make disciples of all nations.

In this final lesson of our five-part study, we’ll show you how the multiplication of disciples and churches is not as difficult as you think, and if you’d like, we’ll provide you with tools and partnership to carry out God’s plan for your life.
