LESSON FIVE
SELFLESS SAVIOR
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Lesson Five. In this lesson we’ll learn what it cost Jesus to save us from sin and death. It could not be purchased with money or labor. There was only one way. He had to sacrifice. Before we begin, let’s open in prayer.
[Open in prayer]
We’re going to read Scripture passages from Matthew 26 and 27. As we read them, let’s consider several questions, including:
Scripture Reading: Read Matthew 26:59-67 and Matthew 27:11-30.
DISCUSSION
Okay, before we discuss our first question, let me read a few additional verses:
Luke 22:63-65 says:
And Jesus spoke prophetically in Isaiah 50:6 and said:
And last, Hebrews 12:2 says:
Okay, so let’s discuss the first question:
Okay, before we discuss our second question, let me read a few more verses:
Isaiah 53:4-5 says:
And 2 Corinthians 5:21 says:
“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.” (NLT)
And Hebrews 13:12 says:
“That is why Jesus suffered outside the gates of Jerusalem. He suffered to make the people holy with his own blood.” (GW)
Okay, now let’s discuss the second question:
Okay, let’s move on to the third discussion question:
[Discuss Question #3]
Now let me ask one final question:
[Discuss Question #4]
Just before we close in prayer, I want to read Romans 10:9:
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (NLT)
As we pray, I want to invite anyone who wants to make Jesus the Lord of their life to do so. Jesus loved you so much that He suffered and died in your place to release you from your debt of sin, and to give us eternal life in heaven with God. So, as I pray, I’ll also lead us in a prayer to make Jesus Lord. If you’re ready, then pray that prayer with me.
[Close in prayer]
CONCLUSION
Now don’t miss our next lesson. It’s one of the most life-changing lessons in this study. We’re going to learn how our Generous Creator, Relational Companion, Righteous Judge, and Selfless Savior is also a Promise Keeper. And you’ll be pleasantly surprised how many promises He’s made to you.

[Open in prayer]
We’re going to read Scripture passages from Matthew 26 and 27. As we read them, let’s consider several questions, including:
- What things did Jesus have to sacrifice and suffer to pay the price for our sins?
- What things did Jesus’ suffering purchase for us?
- How should knowing this change our relationship with Him?
Scripture Reading: Read Matthew 26:59-67 and Matthew 27:11-30.
DISCUSSION
Okay, before we discuss our first question, let me read a few additional verses:
Luke 22:63-65 says:
63 “The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating Him. 64 They blindfolded Him and said, ‘Prophesy to us! Who hit you that time?’ 65 And they hurled all sorts of terrible insults at Him.” (NLT)
And Jesus spoke prophetically in Isaiah 50:6 and said:
“I offered My back to those who beat Me and My cheeks to those who pulled out My beard. I did not hide My face from mockery and spitting.” (NLT)
And last, Hebrews 12:2 says:
“Looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (NASB 2020)
Okay, so let’s discuss the first question:
1. What things did Jesus have to sacrifice and suffer to pay the price for our sins?
[Discuss Question #1]
Okay, before we discuss our second question, let me read a few more verses:
Isaiah 53:4-5 says:
4 “Yet He himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.” (CSB)
2. What things did Jesus’ sacrifice purchase for us?
[Discuss Question #2]
Okay, let’s move on to the third discussion question:
3. How should knowing this about God change our relationship with Him?
[Discuss Question #3]
Now let me ask one final question:
4. Who should you teach this to?
[Discuss Question #4]
Just before we close in prayer, I want to read Romans 10:9:
